Supporters of Local Control Initiative Announce Victory in Lawsuit

March 8, 2012 (Jefferson City, Missouri) – Today in Cole County Circuit Court, Judge Patricia Joyce ruled against the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri, which had filed a suit to challenge the ballot title of the Local Control initiative supported by Safer Missouri Citizens Coalition.

“We are thrilled by the judge’s ruling,” said Safer Missouri Citizens Coalition spokesperson Nancy Rice. “The ACLU’s suit was without merit, and this decision allows us to focus completely on the important work of restoring local control to the St. Louis Police Department.”

Following approval by voters, the Safer Missouri Coalition Initiative will save state and local taxpayers millions of dollars and increase the efficiency, accountability, and effectiveness of the St. Louis Police Department. The initiative is supported by the overwhelming majority of St. Louis voters, as well as by elected officials and taxpayer advocates statewide.

“The state simply should not be in the business of controlling the St. Louis Police Department,” said Rice. “We need to change this outdated law, which is a vestige of the Civil War. Today’s ruling brings us a key step closer to returning control of the St. Louis Police Department where it belongs: with the people and the City of St. Louis.”
